The Analytic Capacity Building and Coordinated Data Development Initiative was launched in 2013/14 at the Canadian Partnership Against Cancer to identify and fill key data gaps and to support analytic capacity building within Canada. The objectives of this initiative are twofold:

  1. to enhance and create new capacity to support analysis and use of evidence to improve the cancer system
  2. to enable consistent pan-Canadian reporting related to cancer treatment.

The Analytic Capacity Building stream of work is increasing training for both cancer data analysts and cancer data coders, building a pan-Canadian analytic network and increasing the supply of cancer-data trained analysts.

To support these objectives, an e-Learning series is being developed to further capacity building. The first module, The cancer registry landscape in Canada, is designed to provide the foundation and create a common understanding of the cancer registry landscape in Canada.

The e-Learning module was created by the Partnership with the support of the Analytic Capacity Building Steering Committee.

Module 1: The cancer registry landscape in Canada

What does the e-Learning module offer?

By the end of this module you will be able to:

  • Describe the purpose and uses of cancer registries
  • Compare types of cancer registries in terms of data sources and governance structures
  • Understand how registry data are collected, coded and maintained
  • Critically evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of Canadian cancer registries
  • Demonstrate skills of accessing, manipulating and analyzing data from cancer registries

The module is designed to provide the foundation and create a common understanding of the cancer registry landscape in Canada.  The module takes approximately 45 to 60 minutes to complete. The first time through the module, you will have to go through each section. However after you complete the module in its full entirety you will be able to return to revisit and review specific sections. Throughout the module, you will be prompted with on the spot quizzes to test what you have learned. There are also several opportunities to apply newly gained insights to realistic scenarios.
