Cancer Guideline Adaptation and Implementation Project (CAN-IMPLEMENT©)
Evidence-based principles, knowledge-to-action key
The CAN-IMPLEMENT© resource developed by the Canadian Guideline Adaptation Study Group makes it possible to extend the reach of existing cancer control guidelines. Building on existing guidelines improves the quality and efficiency of the guideline development process and reduces duplication of effort.
The Canadian Guideline Adaptation Study Group is an initiative of the Cancer Guidelines Advisory Group, Canadian Partnership Against Cancer. Its partners include the international ADAPTE Collaboration and several Canadian guideline development groups with complementary objectives.
The Guideline Adaptation and Implementation project augmented the ADAPTE methodology with Canadian-specific components and active facilitation. The project’s three core objectives included:
1. Evaluation of the international ADAPTE methodology,
2. Development of a guideline adaptation and implementation resource, and
3. Implementation of Knowledge-to-Action.
The CAN-IMPLEMENT© resource emerged from examining the successes and challenges experienced by Canadian cancer care groups as they engaged in guideline adaptation using the international ADAPTE methodology. The original ADAPTE 24 step process provided a catalyst for engaging groups on their guideline adaptation journey. Evaluation at each step of this journey informed the development of CAN-IMPLEMENT©. CAN-IMPLEMENT© is a process and methodology designed to facilitate guideline adaptation and knowledge activation. The final product includes a revised ADAPTE methodology, additional reformulated procedures and resources, and process and project management elements. Importantly, there is a heightened focus on preparing for implementation of the newly adapted guidelines.
CAN-IMPLEMENT© was developed as a practical guide to assist individuals and groups engaged in adapting existing guidelines for local use. The three part resource provides practical guidance to those interested in using already developed guidelines, adapting those recommendations for their own context, and preparing for implementation. The resource will be useful for any guideline developer or adaptor, and is particularly geared towards those with less guideline development experience.
The three-part CAN-IMPLEMENT© Resource includes:
1. GUIDE ‐ Download (PDF)
The Guide includes general information on evidence-informed practice, guideline development, and a planned action framework to move knowledge into everyday practice. The CAN-IMPLEMENT© methodology is presented as a six step process, and includes a Quick Reference Guide, Progress Checks, Field Notes, Tips, and links to an indexed set of Tools that support each step and task in the process.
2. LIBRARY SCIENCE SUPPLEMENT ‐ Download (PDF)
The Library Science Supplement expands instruction on the Search and Screen step for those needing additional assistance with the literature search and management of citations.
3. TOOLKIT ‐ Download (PDF)
The CAN-IMPLEMENT© Toolkit contains a variety of support materials including the PIPOH and AGREE instruments, a list of guideline sources, data management worksheets and sample data, templates for correspondence and project documentation, suggested reading, and links to additional educational resources.
The next phase of the project involves following guideline adaptation groups as they continue to move knowledge (the adapted guideline) into practice. This process evaluation will strengthen the implementation component of the resource.
Your input is welcome! Was this resource helpful in supporting your guideline initiative? Feedback about content, organization and usability of the CAN-IMPLEMENT© Resource will contribute to our development of version 2 planned for early 2011. Please use the following link to provide your feedback:
