Controlling cancer starts with prevention – helping people not get cancer in the first place. It continues through screening programs and includes quality, caring treatment when cancer is found. Cancer control helps support people, and their families, as they live with cancer through recovery or end-of-life.

It is about individuals, but also about the cancer system.

Cancer control includes guidelines and standards, research, data tracking and the cancer workforce.

Excellent cancer control work is underway in Canada. Progress is being made. But more needs to be done. Too many people are still being told they have cancer. Too many people are dying. Quality of life for people affected by cancer can be made better.

We need to find out more about controlling cancer. And we need to move knowledge into action more quickly.

A cancer plan for Canada

Dedicated and talented people across the cancer landscape recognized that cancer control could be better. They saw that the system was fragmented and needed coordinating. They also saw that the need was growing. Over several years they came together – more than 700 groups and individuals – and came up with a plan for a pan-Canadian approach to cancer control.

The Government of Canada committed $250 million to put this plan into action. It funds the non-profit, arm's length Canadian Partnership Against Cancer to spearhead nationwide activities to drive the strategy forward.

The Canadian Partnership Against Cancer, the sponsor of Cancer View Canada, is a key part of Canada's cancer control strategy. The strategy also involves every cancer agency and cancer program and the cancer control efforts of many others. Every charity, university, association, health-care worker, researcher, public servant and volunteer contributing to cancer control is a part of the strategy.

Cancer View Canada invites you to find out more about some of the work being done in cancer control by our partners and by the Partnership as the Canadian strategy for cancer control moves forward.
