Cervical Cancer Control
Fostering an integrated approach to screening

Screening is aimed at healthy people. For some cancers, we know that when we find pre-cancers or early cancers, the chances of successful treatment are much better.

For cancer of the breast, cervix and bowel (colorectal cancer), we have good screening tests. We have scientific proof that using these tests widely will reduce cancer deaths. Research is underway to find life-saving screening tests for other kinds of cancer.

But having a good test is only part of the challenge.

Screening tests may be effective only at certain ages. People who may be at higher risk for cancer because of a family history or other risk factors need to discuss their situation with their care providers — they may need earlier or more specialized tests. People need information on what screening tests, if any, may be helpful to them at whatever age or risk level they are at now.

The Canadian Partnership Against Cancer supports an organized, population-based approach to screening programs. For people of average risk, this is the best way to ensure a high quality of testing and follow-up. This is why we are working with screening partners across Canada to fill knowledge gaps and enhance programs.
