In 2008, the Partnership Against Cancer established the National Staging Initiative (NSI) in response to the integral role that complete, comprehensive and timely pathology reporting plays in the cancer control continuum. In partnership with provincial cancer agencies and programs, the goal of the NSI was to collect national population-based stage data for breast, colorectal, lung, and prostate cancer cases diagnosed on or after January 1, 2010. As part of this initiative, pilot implementations of synoptic pathology reporting tools were funded in two provinces (Ontario and New Brunswick) to support the capture of pathology reports in standardized formats.
Following the success of the NSI’s pilot implementations of synoptic pathology, Ontario and New Brunswick have shared their implementation approaches and lessons learned with provinces who are currently participating in the Electronic Synoptic Pathology Reporting Initiative.
